RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," he commented. "Including them were thousands of British troops stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
